What the hell is this?

QTSynth is an experimental digital modular synth playground. Built by a solo newbie dev over 3 years(on/off), it boasts a variety of features and modules built with not-quite-right DSP that’ll really clean your ears out.
It was designed mostly from first principles, from both SWE and DSP standpoints.(Check out the list of DSP resources that I used in the credits) Doing so instead of relying on a whole bunch of libraries for computation and UI has allowed me to get things slightly “wrong”(in the best way possible) and explore illegal but funky sounding noise-scapes.

What can I do with QTSynth?

With QTSynth you can make music, noise and everything in between. There are a variety of sound source and sequencing modules to choose from. It has full MIDI input capabilities and supports loading and manipulating .wav samples. (polyphonic MIDI input is supported, but very few modules are polyphony-capable at the moment). Use with your favourite faders, keys and sequencing hardware!
Here is an album I recorded with QTSynth, over various stages in its development. You can make all these sounds, and so much more!!

How do I use the damn thing?

Install the Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft (or use provided vc_redist.x64.exe) if you need to and just use QTSynth.exe. Drag modules from the sidebar onto the workspace, connect cables and tweak knob/button/parameters to make noise. Pressing the ‘H’ key will expand the help menu, where you can see all controls/hotkeys. Hovering over a module with the help menu expanded will show a short description of the module.

Will this ever be updated?

Absolutely! I have a ton of features/optimizations planned. I do not have a specific roadmap, but be assured that this is the only project on my plate at the moment, so I WILL put any free time I have into it. This is my first release, and I hope to figure out Mac/Linux builds soon and have a sane release system going forward.

How far along is QTSynth?

QTSynth is pretty functional, all things considered. It's currently missing a lot of small quality-of-life features, and a LOT of cool and fun modules that haven't yet made it out of the design stage.

Is QTSynth safe to run?

Yes! It's a relatively simple program built with C++ that uses SDL2 for rendering and RTAudio to talk to the audio hardware. I recommend using an online virus scanner on the files if you don't trust itch.io .

Why does my screen look like that?

The free version has an annoyance that can be solved by occasionally taking "meds". This visual effect can be triggered manually in the paid version.

How can I support development?

Excellent question! Every little bit helps. You can support me by buying the album in addition to the paid version.
